Chinked Full Log
Chinked log homes are styled with the use of chinking between
the horizontal, and sometimes vertical, logs. Like the hand-scribed log homes,
the logs are hand peeled and laid butt to tip. The difference is that they
are not scribed to fit the log below, but rather shaped as necessary to allow
the logs to stack and space themselves as desired. After the logs are stacked,
a gap exists between them where chinking is then applied to both the interior
and exterior of the logs. Options exist with this type of construction in
the way the logs are spaced, the types of notches, and treatment of the chinking.
The log ends extend beyond the corner for each of the log runs, and can be
styled and sized as desired.
The type of logs used in these homes usually consist of what is called "standing dead timber." The Lodgepole Pine and Engleman Spruce that are harvested from the West are ideal for this situation. Using the standing dead timber, the chinked style log home can be constructed with very few adjustments or concerns for shrinkage and settling. The chinked log homes are often preferred for their stability and unique look.
Here at Design/Build by Visner, we are able
to offer log packages from many of the log manufacturers throughout the country.
As the design and plans are completed, we are able to check the availability,
timing, and costs from the desired manufacturers. Having traveled throughout
the country to inspect the operations of many of the leading manufacturers,
we are able to provide the advice and insight required when making the log
selection.
