Hand-Scribed Log
Hand-crafted log homes consist of logs that are hand hewn
and then scribed to fit the adjacent logs. This type of construction is often
referred to as a Scandinavian or Swedish styled log home. Full length logs
are hand peeled and laid butt to tip to provide uniform stacking. The logs
are scribed and then carved to fit the log below. Though there are several
different type of notches, the "shrink to fit" notch is the most common.
The log ends extend beyond the corner for each of the log runs, and can be
styled and sized as desired.
The type of logs for these homes can vary. The use of Red and White Pine is common to this area, as these logs are native. The Lodgepole Pine and Engleman Spruce are the most common from the West. There are several differences in the species that need to be taken into consideration before selecting the log that is right for you.
Here at Design/Build by Visner, we are able to offer log packages from many of the log manufacturers throughout the country. As the design and plans are completed, we are able to check the availability, timing, and costs from the desired manufacturers. Having traveled throughout the country to inspect the operations of many of the leading manufacturers, we are able to provide the advice and insight required when making the log selection.
Selecting a log style and finding a log
manufacturer to provide the logs that best fit the design is an important
step in the process of building a log home. There are many other phases of
construction to be considered as well, to insure a quality project. Much
of the log work and millwork for the home is done on site by our experienced
craftsmen. Our attention to detail is evident not only in the framing and
trim of the house, but also with the mechanicals, flooring, cabinets, landscape
and other phases.
